Choose a resource, then check what you learned

A useful course matches a task you want to perform. Define that task before comparing formats or advertised duration.

Choose a resource, then check what you learned
StageAskPractical check
Before startingWhat prerequisites and outcome are expected?Read the outline and try an initial exercise
During practiceCan I repeat a task without following the demonstration?Try a similar exercise using a different example
After a sessionWhat is still difficult?Record one specific error and compare a similar task later

Finishing a session or watching a video does not establish competence. Keep a piece of work and the conditions under which you produced it.

Decision aids

Choose an image alternative by its role

A text alternative depends on what the image contributes. Appearance alone is insufficient when it acts as a button or conveys data.

  1. Define the role
  2. Write the equivalent
  3. Read without the image

SituationWhat changesUseful check
Informative imageConvey the essential information in context.Do not unnecessarily repeat a nearby caption.
Functional imageName the action or destination.A button should announce its purpose, not just its icon’s shape.
Complex chartProvide a complete equivalent of useful data or relationships.Supply a description and, where appropriate, a readable table.

An empty alt attribute avoids announcing a purely decorative image. Read the page without images: essential actions and information should remain identifiable.
