Keep a textbook passage with its attribution
- Chapter page
- Identify the studied passage.
- Suggested citation
- Prepare a locatable reference.
- Record textbook title and the section used.
- Inspect the page’s attribution and citation options.
- Record an exact location if you notice an error.
Fictional example: Maya compares a chapter formula with an exercise. She records the section and exercise number before describing the discrepancy. Her reference locates the relevant page; she does not turn her initial uncertainty into a confirmed textbook error.
Your useful record: Textbook, section, exercise and attribution reference.

Distinguish the textbook from additional resources
OpenStax digital textbooks are available online or as PDFs. Online reading requires no account; some student or instructor resources have separate access conditions. Also check the licence of the edition you actually use.
- Reading
- Online view available without an account.
- Materials
- Instructor resources require verified educator access.
- Reuse
- Read the licence and attribution supplied in the textbook.
- Edition and revision
- One edition can have several revisions. OpenStax places a revision number in the print or PDF front matter; compare it with the PDF offered on the book’s details page to identify the version used.
- Reported correction
- A textbook’s Errata page distinguishes reports and their processing status. Before correcting an exercise or course reference, check the relevant revision and report status; a submitted request is not yet a published correction.
- Chapter attribution
- The online view provides attribution at the bottom of each page.
