Describe the context of text displayed in HTML

- Identify where the string will be displayed.
- Read conversion options and the encoding used.
- Check representative characters in that context.
Fictional example: a developer prepares a label containing an apostrophe and ampersand. He compares the initial value with expected HTML rendering without reusing the rule as universal escaping.

Read the conditions of a PHP function
The PHP manual covers syntax, functions, extensions, installation and migration. Extension requirements and version changes matter as much as the code example. User comments are separate from the main documentation.

- Read parameters, return values and error cases.

- Check PHP version and required extensions.
- Migration
- Read incompatibilities before changing versions.
- Read the signature
- In a signature, distinguish types, required parameters, optional parameters and the return value. Then read the explanations: the signature alone does not describe every possible error or side effect.
- Build a test
- Prepare a minimal example with a normal value, a documented boundary value and an expected failure case. Record the PHP version, extensions and outcome; an example working on one machine does not establish every hosting condition.
- Quote conversion
- ENT_QUOTES converts both single and double quotes.
