Export the right area at the right size
- Selected area
- Isolate the content to distribute.
- Pixel dimensions
- Fit the image to its destination.
- Choose page, drawing, selection or a custom area.
- Set the exported image dimensions.
- Inspect the edges and background in the resulting PNG.
Fictional example: an association wants to distribute an icon, but its drawing includes experiments beside the page. It chooses the selection and checks the PNG edges. It keeps the working document separately for future variants.

Keep the vector drawing and inspect the export
Inkscape uses SVG for vector drawings and supports exports including PNG. The working file and delivered image serve different purposes. Keep the SVG, then check the dimensions and exported area of the file intended for a website or document.
- Work
- SVG retaining the vector drawing.
- Delivery
- Export selected for its medium and recipient.
- Check
- Dimensions, area, background and readability at actual size.
- Choose the area
- Export can use the page, drawing, selection or a custom area. Identify that area before setting pixel dimensions: two exports from the same document can have different bounds.
- Background and result
- A transparent background can look white in one application and blend into another medium. Open the delivered file against the intended background, check its edges and legibility, then retain useful settings with the working SVG.
- PNG export area
- Page, drawing, selection or coordinates define the exported area.

To edit the drawing and produce other sizes without starting from the exported image.
How can I avoid an unwanted margin?
