Explore publication relationships
Use authors, institutions and references to expand a bibliography from an identified work.
Check first: Verify automatic metadata groupings against original publications.

Does an updated record mean the article has changed?
- Record
- Examine metadata and its update.
- Text
- Read the published version and publisher notices.
- Record the DOI, publication date and record-update date.
- Find the metadata change without inferring a text correction.
- For a scientific amendment, return to the document and editorial notices.
Fictional example: updated_date changes while a count rises from 12 to 13 citations. This cannot establish that the article’s findings were revised.
Your useful record: Work identifier, distinct dates and the element actually observed.
An index classification or relationship still needs comparison with the document.

Explore an index, then open the works
OpenAlex provides a worldwide research index and documentation for searching, data and its API. Links between authors, institutions and works help explore references; cross-check them against original records and publications.
- Purpose
- An index of research works and their relationships.
- Documentation
- Quickstart guides, tutorials and data/API reference.
- Limit
- An index attribution does not replace the document’s authorship statement.
- Automated classification
- study_designs comes from automated title and abstract classification. An empty list does not establish that a document is not a study. Reading its methods remains necessary.
- Record update
- updated_date can change when the citation count increases. This date alone does not identify a revision of the published text.
- Available copies
- A work can have several locations: a publisher website, institutional repository or preprint server. Before opening a copy, check its version, host and link rather than assuming every address supplies the same file.
- Access and version
- primary_location and best_oa_location represent different selections: the primary copy and an open-access copy. Consult the version and licence of the copy used; free access alone does not identify the journal’s version of record.
- Publication locations
- locations collects places where the same work is available; primary_location favours the copy closest to the version of record. Multiple links therefore need not represent independent studies.

- is_retracted reports a known retraction based on Retraction Watch. Find the original notice before describing the text’s status; a false value is not an independent check with its publisher.

Does an OpenAlex result replace reading the paper?
No. Open the relevant version and check methods and conclusions before citing a finding.
