Identify a book edition
Compare author, title, edition and bibliographic information in the record.
Check first: A catalogue entry does not guarantee that the complete text is available.

Check the edition and its reading mode
- Book edition
- Identify the intended publication.
- Reading option
- Inspect the format actually offered.
- Choose the relevant edition, including language and year.
- Check the reading mode offered for that edition.
- Keep the record before preparing access to the book.
Fictional example: Alex finds a book in the catalogue, but the displayed edition uses another language. He compares editions and access options. He keeps the relevant record without claiming every catalogue book is immediately readable online.
Your useful record: Edition, language, year and displayed access mode.
A catalogue record does not guarantee immediate full-text availability.

Read a link’s bibliographic level
An Open Library address path helps distinguish a work from an edition.
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| /works/ | A collection of a work’s editions. |
| /books/ | An edition with its own publisher, ISBN and other details. |
| /isbn/ | An ISBN lookup that redirects to an edition. |
Try the reasoning
Illustrative situation. A /works/ link lists several translations. Does it establish your cited page?
Read the explanation
Choose the edition read, then check language and publication before attributing pagination. The work grouping alone is insufficient.

Separate a work, an edition and reading access
Open Library distinguishes works from their editions. Compare author and title, then choose an edition matching the language, publisher and year required. A catalogue record and an available reading option are separate pieces of information.
- Work
- Bibliographic grouping for a title.
- Edition
- A published version with its own details.
- Access
- Read the options on the specific record.
- Language preference versus filter
- In the search API, lang=fr prefers a French edition but does not exclude works without one. The query term language:fre instead filters for matching results.

- Search can return information grouped at work level. For exact pagination or translation, open the relevant edition rather than assign every displayed ISBN to one copy.

Does a record guarantee available full text?
No. Check the reading options for the edition; catalogue presence alone does not establish access.
Which link should I share?
Share the exact edition when language, pagination or publication details matter.

Work, edition, format and copy: four different levels
An ISBN identifies a publication in a particular edition and format. Match the identifier to the record and the document actually used.
- Identify the edition
- Compare the format
- Check the individual copy
| Situation | What changes | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Same title, different translation | A shared title does not identify the required text. | Record translator, language, publisher and edition. |
| Print and EPUB | Different product forms receive different ISBNs. | Do not automatically transfer pagination between formats. |
| Well-formed ISBN | The check digit helps detect errors in the number. | Check the record: the digit establishes neither assignment nor availability. |
A cover does not replace the title page and edition details. For a loan or purchase, also check the volume, condition and availability with its holder.
