Compare countries using matching definitions
OECD produces analysis, reports and data to inform public policy. Before making a ranking or chart, check the indicator definition, period and country coverage. An average across countries does not describe every national situation.
- Content
- Public-policy analysis and comparative data.
- Comparison
- Matching indicator, unit, period and coverage.
- Traceability
- Source table or report and methodological notes.
- Codes and labels
- The API documentation distinguishes CSV and CSV with labels. When extracting data, retain dimension codes to recover the selection; labels improve readability without replacing those identifiers.
- Reproducible selection
- Keep the dataset, structure, period and filters with the received file. Check sample rows against the intended selection before aggregating. A displayed table and a complete extraction can have different scopes depending on the options used.
Can I compare figures from different publications?
Only after aligning their definitions and periods.
How should I present an average?
Name the country group and calculation method, retaining relevant exceptions.
