Recover a passage from an arXiv version
- Submission history
- Identify the version read.
- Full identifier
- Fix the citation’s version.
- Read the history and displayed version on the record.
- Keep the identifier with its version suffix.
- Check comments and any withdrawal before citing.
Fictional example: a presentation uses a result from an older version. The record now displays a revision. Lou recovers the full identifier and compares the passage; she does not assume her old screenshot still describes the default version.
Your useful record: Versioned identifier, document date and passage used.
Archiving a version does not validate its results.

Cite the version you actually read
A version suffix distinguishes successive states of an arXiv submission.
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| No suffix | The identifier resolves to the latest version. |
| v1 | First version. |
| v2, v3… | Later versions of the same submission. |
| YYMM block | In modern identifiers it encodes year and month, not the scientific category. |
| Sequence number | Four digits from April 2007 through December 2014; five since January 2015. Preserve leading zeros. |
Try the reasoning
Illustrative situation. Your notes concern v1, but the unversioned link now opens v3. What should you retain?
Read the explanation
The versioned link and the passage used. Compare versions before repeating a conclusion; a new version number alone does not tell you what changed.

Separate deposit, moderation and scientific review
arXiv distributes scholarly works and their versions. It reports becoming an independent nonprofit in 2026 after being hosted by Cornell. Its moderation is not peer review: authors remain responsible for the content.
- Status
- A repository of works; check each article’s publication status.
- Version
- Keep the identifier and version number actually read.
- Review
- arXiv moderation does not validate the results.
- Reproducible address
- An address without a version suffix displays the latest version. To document a citation, retain the v1, v2 or later suffix matching the text actually consulted, together with its date.
- Reading history
- The abstract page lists available versions. If a conclusion changes, compare the relevant versions and record the journal reference separately; a version number alone does not describe editorial status.
- Unversioned arXiv URL
- An abstract page without a version suffix shows the latest version.

- Withdrawal creates a version explaining the reason without a content file for that version.
