Find the right profile before a backup
- about:profiles
- Identify the profile in use.
- Root Directory
- Locate data to preserve.
- Open about:profiles and identify the active profile.
- Distinguish its root directory from its local directory.
- Follow Mozilla’s backup instructions before considering any removal.
Fictional example: Lea finds her bookmarks in “Studies”, while “Personal” looks empty. She records the relevant profile and its root folder before preparing a backup; she does not assume the bookmarks have vanished.
Your useful record: Profile name, folder role and planned backup date, without publishing a personal path.
A second profile organizes uses; it does not replace a backup.

Match updates to the installation channel
Firefox help distinguishes downloaded, Microsoft Store and Linux package-managed installations. Identify your channel first. For direct installations, About checks for updates and restarting applies the downloaded version.
- Channel
- Direct download, Store or package manager.
- Check
- Read the version after restarting.
- Profile and program
- Profile data is stored separately from Firefox program files.

Why are update buttons different?
The installation channel may manage updates instead of the browser. Follow that channel’s help.

HTTPS protects a connection, not a commercial promise
HTTPS encrypts the connection to the requested server. It does not validate an offer, product or business identity claimed in page text.
- Read the server name
- Find the known channel
- Examine the requested action
| Situation | What changes | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Encrypted connection | Data is protected in transit. | Also check the domain and purpose of the request. |
| Familiar name in the path | A path can name a different organisation. | In https://example.invalid/bank, the server remains example.invalid. |
| Link received in a message | Link text can hide a different destination. | For a sensitive task, start from a known bookmark or official website. |
The .invalid address is a fictional example. The portal’s address reader parses syntax without visiting the site, so it cannot inspect redirects or actual content.
