Compare official figures
Read the indicator definition and series rather than quoting an isolated number.
Check first: Match units, population, territory, period and methodological changes.

Compare territories without converting blanks to zero
- Statistical variable
- Read definition and year.
- Published geography
- Identify territorial boundaries.
- Read the dictionary and the chosen variable’s year.
- Check the geographical vintage and warnings.
- Preserve missing values as missing in the comparison.
Fictional example: a group compares income in two municipalities. One file cell is absent. It preserves the absence and reads publication notes instead of entering zero and concluding there is no income. It also checks the territorial boundaries used.
Your useful record: Variable, year, geographical vintage and missing-data note.
The file publication date is not every indicator’s reference year.

Separate statistical period and publication date
Insee publishes statistics, publications, local data and access to the Sirene register. Open the relevant series or publication to identify an indicator’s scope.
- Period
- Date of the measured events, separate from publication.
- Scope
- Territory, population and indicator definition.
- Reuse
- Retain source, version and documentation before calculating.
- Raw and adjusted
- A seasonally adjusted series aims to remove periodic fluctuations to clarify its evolution. Check the stated treatment before comparing series; raw and seasonally adjusted data are not interchangeable versions of a table.
- Retain context
- For reuse, keep the series code, period, unit and treatment with the download date. A value copied without these details can be mistakenly compared with a neighbouring index or another publication frequency.
- Insee period and geography
- An indicator’s year differs from the reference geographical vintage.
