The method
- Write the actual addresses and desired arrival time. Divide each option into initial access, main journey, connections and final leg; mark missing information.
- Record time, available total cost, changes and constraints for every segment. Confirm schedules suggested by a multimodal discovery tool with the operators.
- Choose a priority: arrival, budget, number of changes or accessibility. Compare options meeting that requirement first, then examine trade-offs and the return journey.
Fictional worked example
In a fictional example, route A has 20 minutes of access, 90 by train and 15 at the destination: 125 minutes before any waiting. Route B shows 110 minutes by bus but requires 35 minutes of total access: 145 minutes. The shortest main segment therefore does not automatically produce the best complete route.
