A concrete use case

Identify a business

Compare legal business information with a contract or job offer.

Check first: Match the registration identifier and the relevant establishment.

Our worked method

Two establishments share a name: which one should you check?

Business
Identify the legal entity through its SIREN.
Establishment
Match the SIRET and address of the relevant location.
  1. Start with the identifier on the received document, rather than the trading name alone.
  2. Compare the business and establishment against the address on that document.
  3. Record mismatches and check the contact through an independently found channel.

Fictional example: two “Example Workshop” branches operate in different towns. Their shared name cannot decide the match. The relevant branch’s address and SIRET narrow the check.

Your useful record: Searched identifier, address, consultation date and observed mismatch.

A registry entry does not authenticate the person contacting you.

Fields and distinctions to understand
ElementMeaning
SIREN9 digits.
NIC5 establishment-specific digits.
SIRET14 digits: SIREN followed by NIC.
Actual relocationMoving the activity to another address results in a new SIRET.
Street renumberingA municipal street renumbering preserves the SIRET; it is different from relocating the activity.

Try the reasoning

Illustrative situation. Two addresses show the same SIREN but different SIRETs. Is this necessarily inconsistent?

Read the explanation

No: several establishments may belong to one legal unit. Match the relevant address and SIRET, rather than only the trading name.

Documented resource details

Match the legal unit and the right establishment

The directory provides public legal information about businesses, associations and public services in France. Some details may be withheld from publication. Search an exact identifier before drawing conclusions from a trading name.

SIREN
9 digits identifying a legal unit.
SIRET
14 digits: SIREN plus an establishment identifier.
Limit
Registration authenticates neither your correspondent nor the entity’s solvency.
Identifiers and location
SIREN identifies the legal entity; SIRET identifies an establishment. The first nine digits of the SIRET are its SIREN.
