Compare reference websites by purpose and evidence

Compare up to three directory records: purpose, publisher, documented facts, sources and review dates. Choose a starting point without an invented score.

Prepare your comparison

First decide what you need: a primary document, an explanation, a dataset or a service. Two resources on the same subject can serve different purposes. Start with a subject to narrow the choice, then select two or three records.

Compare the documented information

Missing information remains unspecified. Review dates belong to the original records; displaying this table does not recheck the resources.

Documented facts and added evidence
  • Metadata : The descriptive-data licence alone does not determine file rights.
  • Document : Read Gallica conditions and any partner-specific conditions.
  • Record : Keep the item record, edition, source and intended use.
  • Technical record : The BnF portal describes each API or dataset, its contents, access and associated rights.
  • Recognised text : Text mode comes from character recognition whose quality depends on the document and digitisation. For a quotation, locate the passage in the page image: an OCR error can alter a name, number or punctuation.
  • Missing result : A full-text search with no result does not establish that a word is absent from every page. Check text-mode availability, spelling variants and the digitised page before concluding; retain the query used.
  • Metadata : CC0 applies to the descriptive data presented.
  • Digital object : Read the rights statement for the image, audio or file.
  • Provenance : Keep the institution link and useful attribution.
  • From result to provider : Open the contributing institution’s item record to find its description, available file and corresponding rights information.
  • Prepare a credit : Retain title, identified creator, institution, item link and rights statement; a result thumbnail does not always supply these details.
  • Object-level rights : Each object record presents a rights statement for examining reuse.

  • Metadata at scale : Europeana APIs enable use of machine-readable metadata.

  • Context : Read the creator and collection description.
  • Reference : Keep the document or archival unit identifier.
  • Access : Check available images and consultation arrangements.
  • Paris site : The Hôtel de Soubise was assigned to the Imperial Archives following state acquisition in 1808.
  • Museum : The Archives nationales museum opened in 1867 in the Hôtel de Soubise reception rooms. Distinguish a museum visit from an archive consultation request.
  • Reference form : Letters, numbers and signs in an archive reference must be preserved precisely.

  • Document ordering : The reference is needed to order or reserve the archival unit.

Reading exercise and documented fields No additional reading exercise for this record. Separate record rights from file rights
  • Record : Bibliographic or descriptive information.
  • Digital object : Image, recording or other file: inspect its rights statement.
  • Missing rights : Return to the providing institution’s website.
  • Providing institution : It supplies the object and its documentary context; retain the link to its record.
  • Record and transcription : The terms distinguish content, metadata and enrichments: appearing together does not make their rights identical.

Turn the comparison into a useful choice

  1. Read the purpose: choose the resource that supplies the missing document or action.
  2. Check the publisher and source: an explanatory page does not replace an original dataset or formal procedure.
  3. Open the record, then consult the destination for current conditions and applicable dates.
  4. Record the evidence supporting your choice and the uncertainty that remains.

Different review dates do not prove that one website is better. The table does not measure service availability, accessibility, privacy, prices or reliability and does not rank the resources.
